Acer palmatum Beni kawa  
A fairly recent introduction, Acer palmatum 'Beni-kawa' rivals 'Sango kaku' for its coral-coloured stems in winter. The leaves are fairly small, remaining a fresh green throughout the summer and turning a remarkable butter yellow in the autumn. Less prone to winter dieback, as can happen to 'Sango kaku'. A lovely, medium-sized tree.
    Position? full sun to part shade; out of cold, drying winds - especially coastal winds
    Soil? all soils, but avoid waterlogged areas; very dry soils will need extra watering
    Eventual size? 2 to 3 metres, but can be pruned
    Habit? deciduous; red stems with butter yellow autumn colouring
