Acer palmatum Shishigashira  
Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' is well known to bonsai enthusiasts; it has very slow, compact growth and small leaves, hence the name meaning 'Lion's Mane'. The dark green foliage does not scorch easily in strong sunlight and the autumn colour is an array of bright golden yellows infused with purple. An excellent maple for container cultivation.
    Position? full sun to part shade; sheltered site preferred out of strong winds
    Soil? all soils, but avoid waterlogged areas; very dry soils will need extra watering
    Eventual size? up to 2 metres, but can be pruned
    Habit? deciduous; dwarf form with dense growth
