Catalpa bignonioides 'Aurea', the Golden Indian Bean Tree is a wide, spreading tree with large, heart-shaped leaves which emerge a golden yellow before turning to pale green. Upright pacicles of creamy white flowers are produced in early summer and these are then followed by long, hanging seed pods which remain long after the leaves fall. It is a vigorous tree and can be kept coppiced or pollarded for even bigger leaves!
    Position? full sun and sheltered; avoid very windy positions, especially salt-laden
    Soil? all soils, but avoid waterlogged areas; very dry soils will need extra watering
    Eventual size? up to 5 metres, but can be pruned
    Habit? fast growing, spreading deciduous tree, stunning golden foliage
