Blueberries, Vaccinium corymbosum
Vaccinium corymbosum, the blueberry, has been cultivated for thousands of years in North America and occurs as a wide range of evergreen shrubs and trees.  The fruit over the past few years has emerged as a ‘superfood’ due to its anti-oxidant properties and is highly regarded as an excellent source of vitamins.  The most common form of blueberry grown in the UK is the highbush type which has several different varieties, all of which are deciduous.  They have excellent autumn colour and make a fine addition to the garden, regardless of the fruit.  The creamy white flowers are held in clusters in the spring, setting fruit by early summer, which then ripens by the middle of summer.
