Wisteria sinensis, Chinese Wisteria is a well-known and much-loved climber from the far East. Its cascades of lilac flowers in the spring can be quite breathtaking and these are followed by pale green divided leaves which turn butter yellow in the autumn. Ideal for growing against the side of a house or along a garden fence.
    Position? full sun; out of cold, drying winds - especially coastal winds
    Soil? all soils, but avoid waterlogged areas; very dry soils will need extra watering
    Eventual size? up to 5 metres, but can be pruned
    Habit? twining deciduous climber, needs wires or trellis for support
