Hedychium gingers (ginger lilies) and bananas make a superb statement in the exotic garden, The bananas such as Musa basjoo, the Japanese hardy banana or Musella lasiocarpa, the Chinese Lotus banana are ideal for adding height and presence to your garden. Most are hardy in the south of england, but may require some winter protection in colder areas. Cautleya spicata is an attractive and fairly tough ginger from the Himalayas, with dark green leaves held on bright red stems. The bright yellow flowers are produced towards the end of the season and look stunning set against the contrasting foliage. Suitable for a container or the open ground; should be hardy in all but the coldest parts of the UK.

Hedychium 'Assam Orange' is a lovely ginger which first introduced into the UK in the 1930's which has since proved to be one of the hardiest gingers available. The lush green foliage is topped by masses of upright orange flower spikes. Site in sun to part shade and this ginger will reward you year after year. It should reach around 1.5 metres in height and can also be used as a cut flower.

Hedychium aurantiacum is a selected form of Hedychium coccineum, with bright orange flowers produced towards the end of the summer. The narrow grey-green foliage looks stunning mixed in with other foliage plants and it should be hardy enough to be planted outside in the milder areas of the UK. Once settled, it can reach around 2 metres in height and looks very impressive.

Hedychium ellipticum is an altogether extremely attractive plant with broad, dark leaves and arching stems which are strongly patterned from the dark red edges of the clasping leaf bases and red ligules. The plant produces its magnificent flowers at about 1.2 m. The cone-like structure from which emerges a mass of densely packed white flowers with long, projecting orange filaments, last for a period of a week or more. Should be well mulched for the winter in colder areas.

Hedychium gardnerianum, the Kahili Ginger is one of the most reliable and best known gingers in cultivation. The thick, glaucous pseudostems are clothed in chunky, dark green foliage that is topped by huge, fragrant flower spikes in late summer. In milder gardens, it can remain planted out but should be well mulched for the winter. Alternatively, bring it inside to a conservatory or greenhouse. A stunning exotic plant that is easy to grow.

Hedychium greenii is a superb foliage plant, with maroon stems and undersides of the leaves, with the top of the leaf a dark glossy green. It has a softer appearance than its spiky architectural relatives with large flowers that are a striking orange-red, but have no scent. Hedychium greenii is quite hardy but requires a sheltered position in full sun to light shade if to flower. Give a mulch for the winter if planted outside, to aide frost protection for the rhizomes. It may be worth trying it in wet areas and possibly as a marginal pond plant as it is reported to naturally grow in marshy areas.

Hedychium griffithianum is a delightfully fragrant ginger (in the evenings) which flowers at about 1 m tall with spikes of spidery white flowers with salmon-pink filaments. It is not a fully hardy ginger so we suggest that you bring it into a glasshouse or conservatory for the winter months. May do well in very sheltered gardens let us know!

Hedychium spicatum is a very variable species and one of the hardiest and one of the most floriferous for the open garden with slightly scented flowers. It is one of the smaller gingers reaching around 1 to 1.5m. It tends to set seed readily and when ripe the green seed capsules burst open to reveal orange linings with the seeds enclosed in bright red arils. It is naturally deciduous before the onset of frost and some forms give good yellow autumn colour, before they need to be cut down.

Just like Hedychium ellipticum, Hedychium thrysiforme is a pincushion ginger, so-called due to its flat-topped flower spikes. It has wide, slightly ridged leaves and makes an excellent foliage plant for a container. The white flowers are produced towards the end of the season, so they tend to flower more reliably in a conservatory or glasshouse. Mulch well if planted outside, or bring in for the winter in colder areas.

Musa basjoo, the Japanese hardy banana is a fabulous hardy banana which when given rich soil and plenty of feed can reach 4m or more. It is root hardy so shoots from the ground each year if frosted but if the trunk is protected it gets larger each year. This plant can even flower and produce small bananas (see photo)! Plant in moist rich soil in a sunny or partially shady spot and then all you have to do is stand back and enjoy.

Musella lasiocarpa - Golden Lotus Banana |

Musella lasiocarpa, the Golden lotus banana comes from Yunnan, a province in the south of China. It naturally forms large clumps and rarely exceeds 2 metres in height; once mature the largest stem prodcues a spectacular bright yellow flower (hence golden lotus) that can last for up to 6 months. Once this flower has died, the surrounding stems carry on growing and will each flower in turn. Almost as hardy as Musa basjoo, this banana is worth trying if you don't have the room for such a large banana.
