There are more than 1000 different cultivars of Japanese maples, ensuring a huge range of leaf colours, shapes and sizes. The term 'Japanese maple' tends to incorporate the species Acer palmatum, Acer japonicum and Acer shirasawanum, each type having very distinct characteristics.

Japanese maples are actually very easy to care for as long as you follow a few basic rules (To read more about growing and maintaining a Japanese maple, click here: Big Plant Nursery Guide to growing Japanese maples) such as watering, finding the correct site and soil type. Below are listed our most popular Japanese maples with descriptions of each type; if you find that you are uncertain as to which cultivar to go for, then please contact the nursery and any of our members of staff will be able to help.

For further information on growing Japanese maples, please have a look at our Frequently Asked Questions about Japanese maples.

We have not listed our full range of Japanese maples, as some varieties we only have in small numbers, so if there is a particular plant you are looking for just let us know and we will see what we can do!
