Japanese maples
 

There are more than 1000 different cultivars of Japanese maples, ensuring a huge range of leaf colours, shapes and sizes. The term 'Japanese maple' tends to incorporate the species Acer palmatum, Acer japonicum and Acer shirasawanum, each type having very distinct characteristics.

Japanese maples are actually very easy to care for as long as you follow a few basic rules (as outlined in our 'Guide to growing Japanese maples') such as watering, finding the correct site and soil type. Below are listed our most popular Japanese maples with descriptions of each type; if you find that you are uncertain as to which cultivar to go for, then please contact the nursery and any of our members of staff will be able to help.

Acer japonicum 'Acontifolium'

Acer japonicum 'Acontifolium' is just a beautiful, spreading tree with deeply cut leaves which emerge a very pale green in the spring before turning a dark green for the summer. The autumn colours are amazing, between scarlet red and dark purples. Site out of strong winds in light shad for the best results.

Acer palmatum 'Ariadne'
   

Acer palmatum 'Ariadne' is an almost multi-coloured Japanese maple! The new spring growth is a fantastic mixture of pinks, oranges and yellows, all of which are highlighted by yellow-green veining. The leaves turn all manners of oranges, pinks and reds for the autumn. A spectacular tree.

Acer palmatum 'Beni kawa'

A fairly recent introduction, 'Beni-kawa' rivals 'Sango kaku' for its coral-coloured stems in winter. The leaves are fairly small, remaining a fresh green throughout the summer and turning a remarkable butter yellow in the autumn. Less prone to winter dieback, as can happen to 'Sango kaku'. A lovely, medium-sized tree.

Acer palmatum 'Beni otake'

Acer palmatum 'Beni otake' is a wonderful cultivar with long thin purple leaves and a distinctive overall layered appearance. The leaves retain their purple coloration throughout the season before turning a bright crimson in the autumn. It has a fairly upright habit and could reach 3 metres in 10 years.

Acer palmatum 'Beni shichi henge'
   
Acer palmatum 'Beni shichi henge' is a lovely small tree with green leaves trimmed with margins of pink and white. It should be kept in a fairly sheltered spot to ensure the best growth. Its Japanese name means 'red and changeful', refering to its ever-changing colours throughout the year.

Acer palmatum 'Dormansland' has strong, copper-coloured spring growth, the leaves of which are deeply divided and heavy in texture. The deep green summer colour with red undertones turns an intense scarlet in the autumn - earlier than most - and very reliable. It has wide spreading growth but cannot be described as a large plant.

Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' is a very popular Japanese Maple due to its fantastic deep red colour which can sometimes almost be black-red. It has excellent autumn colour when it becomes a fiery scarlet. One of the best Maples for planting in a sunny position as it holds its colour better than some other red palmatums. Eventual size would be around 5 metres in height but it responds well to pruning if you wish to keep it smaller.

Acer palmatum 'Chishio Improved'

Acer palmatum 'Chishio Improved' is a small leafed maple which emerges as a bright orange red before turning a bluey-green for the summer months. The autumn produces a spectacular bright crimson display; site in a bright spot to ensure good coloration throughout the year. Should reach around 3 metres eventually.

Acer circinatum x palmatum  

Acer circinatum x palmatum is as yet unnamed but shows strong characteristics from both its parents. It has the strong upright growth of Acer circinatum with large palmate leaves. Starting as early as August, it has amazing autumn colours of oranges and reds. It is proving to be wind resistant and a very tough plant; plant in full sun for best colour.

Acer palmatum 'Dormansland' has strong, copper-coloured spring growth, the leaves of which are deeply divided and heavy in texture. Acer palmatum dissectum 'Filigree'  

Acer palmatum dissectum 'Filigree' is one of the best green dissectums which holds its light-green colour well throughout most of the season, soon turning to a mass of yellows for the autumn. This makes an excellent conatiner plant and is best sited in semi-shade to avoid scorch from the intense mid-summer sun. A mature plant has a very striking domed look. Suitable for the smaller garden and works well next to ponds and on rockeries where you can admire the tumbling foliage.

Acer palmatum 'Ichigyoji'
Acer palmatum 'Ichigyoji', Japanese maple  

Acer palmatum 'Ichigyoji' is a very similar maple in habit to 'Osakazuki' but with thinner textured green foliage. It is very rare in cultivation and difficult to find.. The autumn colour differs to 'Osakazuki's scarlet red, instead being a bright yellow softly suffused with orange. Fairly vigorous grower reaching around 3 or 4 metres if allowed.
