Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis'
Phyllostachys aureosulcata Aureocaulis, Golden Crookstem Bamboo

Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis', the Golden Crookstem Bamboo (so called due to its occasional kinked new growth) is a wonderfully dainty bamboo with bright gold canes and airy foliage. The emerging canes are blushed pink in strong sunlight, making this a very attractive specimen bamboo. It reaches around 4 to 5 metres in height so is ideal for hedging or screening. It does well in a container and looks stunning on a patio as a main feature plant.

Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis'
Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis', Golden Crookstem Bamboo

Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis', the Golden Crookstem Bamboo is one of the first bamboos to shoot in the spring. Expect brilliant gold canes flushed pink in summer with vertical green stripes. Should reach 4 to 5 metres in height when planted in the ground in a sunny position. The occasional bending of the canes is particular to this bamboo, hence its common name. You'll be the envy of your neighbours with this bamboo!

Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Castillonis'
Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Castillonis'

Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Castillonis' is ideal if you are after a big gold bamboo with green stripes, then this one has got to be in contention. It soon produces huge new culms and grows incredibly well in rich, fertile soil and a bright position. It is not recommended for the small garden unless you are quite mad - it can reach a height of 6 metres when it's happy. Plant it, stand back and watch it grow in awe!

Phyllostachys bissettii

Phyllostachys bissettii
Phyllostachys bissettii is a striking bamboo with glossy grey-green canes. A very strong growing species that retains its dark, fresh green colour throughout the worst winter. It produces masses of leaves and can grow up to 5 metres in height. Ideal for a tough hedge or as a specimen. One of our best sellers as a hedging plant due to its dense canopy. A great value bamboo.

Phyllostachys flexuosa

Phyllostachys flexuosa
Phyllostachys flexuosa is an unusual bamboo with zigzagging stems on mature plants (hence flexuosa). The dark green to olive green stems can reach up to four metres in height an tend to have an arching habit. The foliage is light and airy and gives the bamboo a dainty appearance. It should be kept well watered until established and well fed to ensure strong growth.

Phyllostachys nigra - Black Bamboo
Phyllostachys nigra, Black Bamboo

Phyllostachys nigra or the black bamboo, has to be the most popular and best known of all bamboos. The jet black canes reach around 4 or 5 metres in height and are covered in masses of lush green dainty leaves. The best situation for the black bamboo is in a good, rich soil that does not dry out too readily but also does not have a tendency to waterlog over the winter months.

The black bamboo grows well in a container and must be kept well watered at all times to ensure good, strong growth. Feed with a general purpose feed between the months of May and September to keep the plant looking lush and healthy.

You should expect the black bamboo to add about a third to its height and spread each year and if it is really happy, maybe more! To achieve the blackest canes possible, plant in full sun and enjoy the wait as the canes turn from a lush green to an ebony black.

Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis'
Phyllostachys vivax Aureocaulis
Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' is simply the biggest and best golden bamboo! It will reach a similar size to the species but has amazing gold canes with intermittent green striping. Perhaps the best specimen bamboo you can grow - just make sure you feed and water it well for the best results. If you have room for a big bamboo, either planted or in a large container, then this is the one!
