Strawberry Tree
Strawberry Tree, Arbutus unedo
Arbutus unedo, the Strawberry Tree is a beautiful evergreen shrub which grows to around 3 metres in height. The bell-shaped flowers are produced in late summer followed by orange fruits which ripen to strawberry red. Normally, the flowers and fruits are present at the same time, making a spectacular display throughout the autumn and winter. Suitable for all soils but needs a bright position to grow well - you should expect between 20 and 30 cm of growth each year. It is very easy to prune to shape and a very rewarding plant to have in the garden.

Aucuba japonica var. borealis, Japanese Laurel
Japanese Laurel, Aucuba japonica
Aucuba japonica var. borealis, Japanese Laurel is a very hardy large shrub from Japan, tolerant of shady positions due to its native woodland habitat. Glorious glossy dark green leaves, slightly larger than normal Aucuba, with a slight rough serration. Would make an excellent container plant or a very good backdrop to a border. This plant works very well as a structural specimen and is an ideal background to show off other plants against.

Buxus sempervirens, Box Tree
Box Tree, Buxus sempervirens
Buxus sempervirens, Box Tree is often a very popular choice for topiary and is regularly seen in herb gardens and formal areas. It works particularly well in containers and if kept clipped, retains good dense growth. It is happiest in half sun to full shade and is relatively slow growing. Most important is that it does not dry out if kept in a comtainer. If well looked after, this is a very easy and rewarding plant to grow.

Drimys winteri, Winters Bark
Winter's Bark, Drimys winteri
Drimys winteri, Winter's Bark is a highly sought after large shrub from Chile with large mid-green leaves which have striking near-white undersides. Loose clusters of fragrant white flowers are produced in late spring. This is a hardy and fast-growing shrub, much under-used in the garden in our opinion.

Nandina domestica, Sacred Bamboo
Nandina domestica, Sacred bamboo
Nandina domestica, Sacred Bamboo is a much under-rated evergreen shrub from China which isn't actually a bamboo. It reaches no more than 1.8 metres in height and is covered in masses of tiny leaves. After a good hot summer and a couple of frosts, the foliage takes on wonderful reds, oranges and purples. Make sure you look out for pretty white flower spikes followed by red berries. It is quite happy growing in a container and shouldn't really require any pruning.

Poncirus trifoliata, Hardy Citrus
Poncirus trifoliata, Hardy Citrus

Poncirus trifoliata is a very unusual shrub related to citrus and is often used as the rootstock for grafting different citrus varieties due to its strong growh and cold tolerance. It flowers around March, before the leaves appear and after a good summer will produce small round orange fruits (which are not edible, sadly). The whole plant is covered in large spines, which gives its an amazing architectural appearance during the winter months. Fast growing and easy to grow.
