Young olive trees

You may or may not know that there are hundreds of different olive varieties grown around the world with cultivars varying country to country. Italy is most famous for 'Leccino' and 'Frantoio', Spain is widely planted with the variety 'Picual' and France is well known for 'Picholine'. Obviously, some olive varieties grow much better in the UK than others and we have been researching this areas for many years.

Below you will see a selected list of the best cultivars suitable for the UK climate; where necessary we will advise on which cultivars are appropriate for where you live. If you are at all unsure about which variety is best for you, then please contact us at the nursery and one of our members of staff will be more than happy to advise you. If you would like to have a quick glance at a few of our favourite olive tree varieties, please have a look at our olive tree cultivars page.

Small, bushy olive tree

Bushy olive trees

The small, bushy olive tree is an ideally sized olive tree to send as a gift; suitable for growing outside in warmer parts of the country, but will need to be in a conservatory or greenhouse in the colder areas of the UK for the winter until it is a couple of years older.

Bushy olive trees can also make an excellent hedge, which is a little more interesting than conifers! It is easily clipped and trimmed and being evergreen ensures good coverage for the whole year.

We can include a gift message if you wish - just fill out the appropriate box in the checkout. This is one of our most popular presents - Luke doesn't come with the plant though!

2 year old olive tree
Olive trees

We have several different cultivars of olive tree available at this size. They are young trees which were grafted 2 years ago.

Grafting olive trees ensures that you can produce a large number of plants which will all be exactly the same - something which cannot be done when growing from seed.

This size of olive tree is ideal for planting outside in all but the coldest areas of the UK, where a more mature plant would be suitable.

These trees are sourced in Tuscany from family run nurseries which have been grafting olive trees for 3 or 4 generations.

4 year old olive tree
Olive trees

These 4 year old olive trees are more substantial than the two year old trees, with a trunk which is approximately about the thickness of a broom handle.

This age of tree is absolutely fine to plant outside and should withstand -10 degrees Centigrade or lower, as long as it is planted in a nice sunny position and not sited in very heavy, waterlogged soil.

These olive trees look fantastic in pots and are often used as replacements for lollipop bay trees - why not get a pair to go either side of your front door?

6 year old olive tree
Olive trees and informatio about olive trees

The six year old trees really start to show the typical Tuscan 'goblet' shape of olive tree. The centre of the tree is kept open by pruning to ensure that the fruit produced in the middle are allowed to ripen.

This is probably our most popular size of olive tree and they look stunning planted out in the garden as a specimen tree.

These olive trees will also be ideal for growing in containers and look magnificent on a patio or terrace.

8 year old olive tree
Semi mature olive trees

This size of olive tree has a good, thick trunk and a large rounded, open head. They are among the nicest olive trees we have had at the nursery and are already proving to be very popular.

These olive trees will also be ideal for growing in containers and look magnificent on a patio or terrace.
