Hardy Gingers and Bananas make a superb statement in the exotic garden, The bananas such as Musa basjoo, the Japanese hardy banana or Musella lasiocarpa, the Chinese Lotus banana, are ideal for adding height and presence to your garden. Musa basjoo can reach impressive heights with plants reaching 4 or 5 metres often flowering and producing tiny inedible bananas.
As well as adding structure to your garden Hedychium gingers provide stunning flowers and heady fragrance in late summer and early autumn. Another ginger, Cautleya spicata form clumps with masses of yellow flowers and is hardy outdoors even in the far north. most are hardy in Southern of England, but may require some winter protection in colder areas.
