Glycyrrhiza yunnanensis

Japanese liquorice

Description

Glycyrrhiza yunnanensis is a plant that stopped us in our tracks whilst on our travels.  A spectacular liquorice relative with the most extraordinary seed heads which follow lilac flowers.  The flowers sit upon tall, upright stems and turn from lilac to green, then purple and finally, as the seed-heads swell, a rich bronze-brown colour.  These seed-heads remain throughout winter although they’re useful in flower arrangements so may be cut.  Foliage is equally beautiful with mid-green, slender pinnate leaves and as the stems mature they will develop a rich red-burgundy colour.

An unusual shrub-like perennial which we witnessed being grown amongst mixed grasses and Fargesia bamboo. A hardy and versatile plant, suited to a sunny, open position in free draining soil.

During autumn and winter, plants will be cut bback prior to sending out.
