Agave filifera

Thread Agave

Description

Agave filifera rather well named as the ‘Thread Agave’ due to its habit of producing white cotton like threads that collect amongst the narrow spine tipped leaves. An attractive small to medium sized agave rarely growing more than 40cm in diameter perfectly suited to container cultivation. This is a great agave for windsill cultivation or placing outdoors during summer and enjoying indoors for the winter as Agave filifera is best kept above freezing, prefering like us to be warm and dry during the colder months. Apart from its compact ornamental habit and leaf structure Agave filifera has an amazing trick up it’s sleeve, when it feels like it, anything from 3-10 years this little agave can produce a tall flower spike over 2 metres high which is clothed in dainty 3-5cm long trumpet like flowers which can be a delicate yellow or even pale purple. Loved by bees and other pollinators the sweet nectar contibutes to tasty Mexican desert honey, and to me the flowers look much like foxtail lilies, Eremurus.

A easy agave provided winter temperatures can be kept above freezing, its relatively small size makes agave filifera easy accomodate. Best grown in fertile free draining gritty compost.
