Group 2 clematis are large flowered varieties that flower in early summer often with a second flush in late summer. They should be pruned in late winter to early spring to retain a frame of old wood but encouraging new growth from which the flowers form. Prune healthy stems to above healthy buds 12 to 18 inches above the ground. Overgrown plants can be reduced by pruning back stems after the first flush of flowers.
