A very interesting form of Cryptomeria with a very unusual twisted habit, the needles literally twisting round the stem, the stems twist from the trunk and the trunk in turn is also twisted... wierd and wonderful! The small brown cones are also interesting, the female cone has its own male strobus to fertilise its own cone. Open branched, one of the faster growing cryptomeria, reaching 4m after 10 years, can be pruned to restrict growth. Rasen is the Japanese name for a barber pole. An excellent tree if you like botanical curiosities!
- Common Names: Twisted Cryptomeria and Japanese cedar
Plant with good quality compost in fertile, free draining soil, in a sheltered position in sun/part shade. Prune if desired to restrict size and encourage a bushier habit, by pinching out the soft growing tip in spring/early summer.
