Daphne bholua 'Big Plant Selection’ This beautiful daphne is from a selected seedling from a mature Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill’ growing in our nursery garden. It shows strong upright growth with deep green lanceolate evergreen leaves which are topped in late winter, early spring with masses of deeply fragrant pink flowers.
Daphne bholua originates from wooded mountain slopes in the Himalayas and as such prefers a location in the garden that mirrors this as far as possible. We grow ours amongst silver birches, maples and bamboo where they benefit from shade during the heat of the day and reasonable protection from cold drying winds.
As with all plants add good compost when planting, I’d prefer something that was slightly acidic if possible and keep the soil around your Daphne moist until it has established in it’s new home. Ongoing maintenance is minimal Daphne bholua usually only reaches 150cm - 200cm high and rarely needs pruning. An annual top dress with good compost and maybe a little slow release fertiliser is all I’d recommend. Definitely in my top 10 of must have shrubs!
