Description

Gunnera manicata is an extraordinary Brazilian native, otherwise known as ‘Giant Rhubarb’ although unrelated to the Rhubarb we enjoy in a fool or crumble – but you can see the resemblance!

Gunnera manicata leaves are huge, up to 2m across, held on stems sometimes 3m tall and they create a spectacular and exotic display.  There are some fabulous examples in Sheffield Park and Leonardslee Gardens and in some cases the foliage is large enough to stand under!  Fear not however, if your garden is on the smaller size, you can grow Gunnera manicata in a large container to great effect.  Plants need to be kept moist and in mild gardens may be used as marginal plants however beware, Gunnera manicata is not completely hardy and may succumb to cold winters.

In cooler areas plants may be lifted or given winter protection by folding the leaves over the crown of the plant (once they have died back), or using hessian or horticultural fleece.  Pots may be moved into protected areas but do ensure the crown of the plant doesn’t freeze.

During the summer months large, ornate flower spikes form giving additional interest – they highly unusual in appearance.  The leaves themselves are deep green held on rigid, spiny stems – they’re bold and architectural and suited to partial shade or full sun in a seltered position.  Many Gunnera manicata found in garden centres or online are in fact Gunnera tinctoria – a beautiful plant in its own right, but often mis-sold as G. manicata and grown through micro-propagation.  Our stock is the real deal – Gunnera manicata.

  • Common Names:Chilean rhubarb, giant rhubarb, prickly rhubarb.
