Leucothoe axillaris 'Curly Red'
'Curly Red' is named thus because of the unusual leaf shape that literally curls back to give this compact evergreen shrub such a striking appearance. Further interest is made by the young leaves emerging bright green with red tints. These become more green in the summer but as temperatures drop, a red returns making this a colourful addition to the winter garden. Leaucothoes grow into a wide, low mound shape making them ideal for ground cover, pots, or specimens at the front of a border. Eventual height 1 m. Prefer acid to neutral soil, plant with ericaceous compost. Hardy, grows in all light conditions but needs moist soil in full sun.
