Description

Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ is a small tree of bushy habit, with deep purple leaves divided into about 7 lobes, and becoming red in autumn. Inconspicuous red-purple flowers in spring may be followed by winged, purple fruits. Deciduous. Prefers partial shade / full sun in a sheltered South-facing, West-facing or East-facing garden. Grows well in loam, clay, sand or chalk soil. Height and spread 408m.

  • Position:Dappled / part shade, out of cold, drying winds - especially coastal winds.
  • Soil:All soils, but avoid waterlogged areas very dry soils will need extra watering.
  • Eventual Size:3 to 4 metres, but can be pruned.
  • Habit:Deciduous compact, bushy, rounded tree.
  • Foliage:Red in spring, red and purple in the autumn.
  • Common Names:Purple Japanese maple.
