Carpinus betulus is an excellent choice for hedging and pleaching. It clips beautifully and although deciduous will hold onto some leaves during winter. Leaves turn a buttery golden-yellow in the autumn and emerge a vibrant green in spring. It's hardy and robust too, tolerating poor planting conditions if necessary. Carpinus betulus is a native tree found predominantly in the south of England, it boasts vibrant green, ribbed leaves with fine toothed edges and although it is generally of a conical habit, it is frequently trained into pleached trees, box heads and other forms.
