Description

Fatsia polycarpa ‘Green Fingers’ is an exciting relatively new introduction to us gardeners here in the U.K with dramatic deeply divided palmate leaves and bushy evergreen habit. The species Fatsia polycarpa originates from Taiwan where it can be found growing amongst trees in shady valleys and hill sides and was once rare and hard to find. My guess is that ‘Green Fingers’ is little different from the species just a product of an entreprising grower and micropropagation laboratory mass producing young plants. Whatever, It doesn’t matter as Fatsia polycarpa ‘Green Fingers’ is a fine plant and very worthy addition to any sheltered shady garden adding exotic lush foliage year round.

Should be hardy in most gardens but maybe worth giving a little shelter if you live in a particularly cold spot. Like most fatsia ‘Green Fingers’ is an adaptable plant, happy in a cool convervatory or even as a houseplant. We grow ours in rich fertile moisture retentive but not waterlogged soil located in dappled shade where it can reach 2 or more metres high albeit quiet slowly. All in all a rather aristrocratic choice jungly looking plant which interestingly have the typical ivy like flowers produced in early autumn providing late season nectar to butterflies and bees.

  • Position:Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil:Moist, well-drained fertile soil.
  • Flowering period:September to October.
  • Hardiness:Frost hardy (needs winter protection in cold areas).
  • Eventual Size:Up to 2 metres, but can be pruned.
  • Foliage:Evergreen .
