Description
Colocasia esculenta ‘Hawaiian Punch’ is another spectacular ornamental taro with large heart shaped nodding leaves which are richly veined in deep red and are held on glossy dark red stems up to 1.20cm high. The leaves on this colocasia are themselves a deep green contrasting nicely with the red veining and leaf margins. We have found Colocasia esculenta ‘Hawaiian Punch’ to be a vigorous and easy to grow variety happy outside during summer and autumn or grown in a container as a lovely house or conservatory plant.
As with all colocasia for best results feed regularly during the growing period, we use seaweed extract. In fact during summer colocasia can be stood in dilute liquid feed if grown in containers to get really large leaves!
Although tropical in origin, colocasias do remarkably well outside in UK gardens throughout the warmer months; some even tolerating year-round cultivation outside in particularly well protected areas. We think colocasias are essential if you like exotic or jungly plants. Don’t be put off by the fact that they aren’t fully hardy as they can be easily over-wintered by either lifting the corms after the first frosts and storing them in soil, in a damp and frost free environment or alternatively they can be grown in a container and placed in a frost free location for the winter.
