Eriobotrya japonica 'Rose Anne' is a brilliant new variety of the Loquat Tree. I first discovered 'Rose Anne' growing at small family run propagation nursery in Belgium where the grower told me that this Eriobotrya was discovered growing in a garden locally. Presumed to be a seedling it had larger than average leaves, proved to be free from disease and had survived undamaged a couple of really cold winters. Subsequently named after the finders daughter 'Rose Anne' has since been grown here at Big Plant Nursery for 2 years with great results. Our plants are propagated by grafting onto a rootstock that is particularly suited to our northern climate and as such we are proud to say that this really is the Eriobotrya we've all be waiting for, large leaves, free from disease that so often effects regular Loquats, and even hardier.
So what are you waiting for, if you want a fabulous large shrub or small evergreen tree for a sunny garden where a jungly exotic or architectural look is required here it is.'Rose Anne' makes a plant somewhat like a large leaved rhododendron but without being fussy about it's soil requirements and being fairly windproof. Unfortunately for us, unless you live in a very mild location, the fragrant flowers are produced in winter and rarely produce fruits. Full sun to part shade, tolerates all soils except waterlogged, salt and southerly wind. Native to China
- Position: full sun, away from northerly exposure
- Soil: any, free draining
- Eventual Size: 4-5m after 20 years
- Habit: upright, bushy
- Foliage: Extra large, textured grey/green leaves
- Common Names: 'Rose Anne' Loquat Tree
Feed with a slow release general purpose in early spring and again in July. Water vregularly in the growing season while it is establishing but do not allow the soil to become waterlogged. Feed with diluted liquid seaweed during spring and summer. Prune if required in spring.
