Homalomena rubescens ‘Maggy’

Description

Homalomena rubescens ‘Maggy’ is a uncommon menber of the aroid family being related to Alocasia and Colocasia both species we love to grow. Being a native to jungle conditions growing sporadically in Southern Asia, particularly Assam and Bangladesh, Homalomena enjoy dappled shade and humid conditions as such making them relatively easy to grow house or even placed outside during warm periods, idealy keeping a minimum temperature to 15 degrees celius although they do seem able to cope with lower tempertures for short periods.

Homalomena rubescens ‘Maggy’ can reach 120cm or so high with lush green heart shaped leaves 20- 40cm long held on upright stems an attractive pale pink in colour. Best grown in fertile moisture retentive compost with the roots kept fairly tight in the container as it dislikes being overpotted so only repot into the next size pot as they grow. Extra humidity is prefered so stand on a tray with gravel in and keep that moist without the roots themselves standing in water. A cool jungle house or conservatory plant that’s happy to have a summer holiday in the garden.
