Cryptomeria japonica ‘Rasen’ is an unusual dwarf form of the magnicient Japanese Cedar it’s deep green evergreen needles literally twisting round the stem, the stems twist from the trunk and the trunk in turn is also twisted. Hard to descibe but once seen you get the picture, like many of these dwarfing cultivars ‘Rasen’ is a perfect compliment to bold hardy exotic planting or equally at home amongst Japanese maples, bamboos and birches adding both summer interest and winter structure.
Cryptomeria japonica ‘Rasen’ is very a hardy shrub like small tree looking it’s best when planted in dappled shade enjoying the company of other plants nearby. The books all say Japanese cedars need the holy grail, acidic fertile free draining soil but I have found them to be pretty amenable to ranging soil conditions, even happy on our wet clay here. Just prepare the planting site well with good quality compost and apply a generous mulch around the base of the plant once planted.
