Description
Beschorneria septentrionalis is a relatively new introduction, the first wild populations first discovered as recently as 1987. It is found growing on mountain slopes in the Mexican region of Tamaulipas amongst native scrub. It has broad soft yucca like leaves up to 75cm long forming a showy almost hosta like clump, infact it also shares hosta like requirements enjoying fertile soil and dappled shade. Surprisingly once mature usually in late summer a tall bright red flower spike is produced often reaching 150cm high which gently arches over with graceful clusters of green tipped red bell like flowers. An amazing sight! Should be hardy in milder gardens but may need protection in severe winters.
