Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sekkan-Sugi’ is a beautiful form of the Japanese incense cedar with a lovely arching slightly pendulous habit. The new growth is spring and summer is a pure creamy white maturing slowly into lush green white in autumn and winter may turn a pinkish colour. Best suited to sheltered favoured positions in the garden Cryptomeria ‘Sekkan-Suki’ is well worth cosseting as it truly is a spectacular shrub or small tree. I grow mine in heavy brick making clay, adding mulch each year. Most books recommend slightly acidic peaty soil so avoid shallow chalks. Another not often seen conifer for the enthusiast or connoisseur.
