Description
Perovskia attriplicifolia ‘Blue Spire’, commonly known as Russian Sage, this wonderfully aromatic plant with deeply divided silvery-green leaves which when touched give off a delicious herby fragrance. During summer, tall silvery flower spikes are produced which float above the leaves, opening to dainty sky blue flowers. We plant Perovskia amongst grasses and herbaceous plants to great effect, where the loose open habit moves wonderfully with the wind, complimenting the movement of the grasses beautifully.
Like all Perovskias, ‘Blue Spire’ is a brilliant plant for attracting butterflies and bees to your garden and is a valuable sources of nectar. Best planted in an open and sunny position where it is tolerant of most soils except waterlogged conditions.
During winter, Perovskias lose their leaves, leaving a shrubby framework behind, like grasses, this can be left to add structure to the garden, the dead flower heads looking amazing during the winter frosts. During March cut back the dead stems to 15cm or so, just before new growth begins.
