Fatsia japonica ‘Variegata’

Description

Fatsia japonica ‘Variegata’ the ‘Variegated Fatsia’ is a really good old fashioned form of the ever popular Fatsia japonica with large glossy deep green evergreen palmate leaves randomly variegated cream to white sections. As the name suggests another exotic looking plant originating from Japan where it can be found growing in shady spots amongst trees and shrubs in fertile moisture rich soils. I like to plant it amongst bamboo, palms and Japanese maples where it enjoys a little shelter from both sun and wind happy to reach 2 or more metres high forming a strong feature year round and especially striking during winter once the maples have dropped their leaves. Often seen in dull dark courtyard gardens where the deep green and contrasting variegation appear to shine brightening up the darkness. From autumn through to spring depending on the weather small creamy coloured flowers will appear which are loved by pollinators these are subsequently followed by small black fruits which are loved by birds.

So to summarise Fatsia japoinica ‘Variegata’ requires a semi-full shade position to look its best and sits beautifully next to other hardy-exotic or jungly plants such as palms and bamboo. Ensure it has free-draining fertile moisture retentive soil for maximum lush growth. An interesting fact is that although we grow and sell this fatsia as an outdoor plant it can also be grown as shady conservatory or even house plant.
