Sciadopitys verticillata

Description

Sciadopitys verticillata known as the ‘Japanese Umbrella Pine’ is a very beautiful evergreen small tree from, yes you’ve guessed it Japan. It’s name derives from the whorls of narrow needle like leaves held typically at the tips of each branch in very attractive manner. The overall appearance is striking, the leaves being deep glossy green and the trunk a soft peeling reddish brown. Although capable of reaching over 10 metres high in the wild it can generally be treated as a shrub-like small tree here in the U.K, indeed Sciadopitys can be pruned quite successfully into shape if need be.

Very hardy to cold be best grown in a sheltered position located full sun to part-shade avoiding waterlogged soils. Can be grown in a container too if you wish.
