Polystichum setiferum ‘Proliferum’

Soft Shield Fern

Description

Polystichum setiferum ‘Proliferum’ or the Soft Shield Fern is a classic hardy evergreen fern with typical triangular finely divided ‘fern’ like leaves. There is a good reason Polystichum setiferum ‘Proliferum’ is so popular it makes a good sized plant up to 90cm high and is really easy to grow. Being tolerant of more sun and drier conditions than many ferns it is suitable for planting in a wide range of conditions and looks particularly good when planted in company with Asplenium scolopendrium ferns.

All the books say it prefers a rich acidic soil but I have seen it growing quite happily on shallow chalky soil in a sunny south london garden. I would however always recommend adding a good organic moisture retentive compost when planting. Can also be used as a container plant.
