Description
Heliconia schiedeana, otherwise known as ‘Hardy Lobster Claws’ is an exquisite and highky exotic looking cousin of the banana. The leaves are spectacular – zingy green, banana-like and large. Heliconia essentially is an ‘evergreen perennial’ reaching up to 8ft in height, although said to be hardy, here in the UK we would recommend bringing your Heliconia indoors for the winter – either in a frost free greenhouse or cool conservatory. During late summer, unusual upward facing scarlet ‘lobster claws’ appear from which bright yellow flowers erupt – reminiscent of a Strelitzia flower and long lasting too.
Plant in fertile, moisture retentive compost and position in partial sun-shade. Do ensure the plant isn’t over watered during the winter months.
