Description
Dracunculus vulgaris is a fabulously weird and wonderful, exotic and mysterious looking plant! Otherwise known as the ‘Dragon Lily’ or ‘Dragon Arum’, and for good reason. The flowers, which appear from May, consist of large hooded ‘spathes’ which are a fabulous deep crumson-bugundy and have a long, almost black central ‘spadix’ – quite spectacular in appearance. Upon opening, the flower omits a sinister fragrance reminiscent of rotting flesh, this is to attract flies which the plant relies on for pollination. Fear not – this smell isn’t overhwelming and will fade in a couple of days!! Stems are light green and mottled with glossy foliage appearing after flowering.
Plant in full sun to partial shade in fertile, moisture retentive soil and enjoy the show!
