Arbutus x andrachnoides

Description

Arbutus x andrachnoides is a sought after and beautiful small evergreen tree, loved for its peeling red bark which reveals silvery-green bark underneath.  During November to March, clusters of creamy-white ‘urn-shaped’ flowers are produced providing a valuable source of nectar for pollinators.  Flowers are followed by small, textured red fruits (resembling little strawberries). The fruit is edible but not exceptional in taste!  Being a hybrid form of Arbutus unedo and Arbutus andrachne, Arbutus andrachnoides will tolerate most soil types and is hardy down to around -12c.  Plant in a sunny position to enjoy the most vibrant bark and choose a shelterted spot.  Good drainage is essential and once established this is an exceptionally drought tolerant plant.
