Description
Brassaiopsis mitis is a truly remarkable deciduous shrub-like plant originating from mountain sides in north east Asia where it grows in dappled sunlight along woodland edges. It produces incredible palmate leaves with long fingers when young which can be over 50cm in diameter, hard to describe but once seen never forgotten. It can reach 3-4m in height the adult leaves being even larger, more palmate and equally stunning. Best planted in a shelterted position away from strong winds which can damage the magnificent leaves, in fertile, free draining soil.
What is remarkable is that it is fairly hardy given a sheltered position making perhaps one of the most stunning additions to an exotic garden.
We’ve described it as deciduous, which it is with us, but in really mild, almost frost free gardens, it can remain evergreen.
