Cussonia transvaalensis

Description

Cussonia transvaalensis, or ‘Grey Cabbage Tree’, is an extremely architectural evergreen small tree-like shrub from South Africa. Probably one of the hardiest Cussonia, it is able to tolerate light frosts easily. Best in full sun and free draining soils. Once mature, it produces wonderfully fissured bark on slender trunks, which hold whorls of deep greeny-grey giant snowflake-like leaves.

For us here in the UK, probably only hard in the mildest of gardens but redeems itself by being tolerant of hard pruning. Can be container grown and kept frost free during winter. Rapid regrowth appears in late spring.
