Description
Musella lasiocarpa var. rubribracteata (Sichuan Star) is a stunning very rare species native to Sichuan China and causing much excitement owing to the vivid, red-orange star-like flower spike.
Here in the UK, it can be treated just the same as the species Musella lasiocarpa (Golden Lotus Banana). Fairly hardy in milder parts of the UK, this banana naturally has a dormant period through the winter. We would recommend some protection by mulching around the base, protecting with straw/fleece on the above ground parts of the plant to ensure healthy growth in the spring.
Once mature, the largest stem will produce offsets which indicates that it is nearing flowering time. Happy in full sun to part shade ideally in moist fertile free draining soil. A good choice if space is tight as Musella lasiocarpa usually remains compact rarely growing more than 150cm high.
**To assist with shipping plants may be cut back, this does not harm the plant in any way**
