Cyphomandra betaceum (Solanum betaceum)

Description

Cyphomandra betaceum better known throughout the tropics as the Tamarillo is an exotic large leaved shrub or small tree, that produces tasty sweet tasting tomato-like fruits. These are widely used in South American cuisine and smoothies.

For us here in the UK it is a very jungly, half-hardy exotic plant and perfect for adding drama to jungle planting.  Position in a sheltered position to avoid strong winds damaging the huge leaves. Requires well drained, fertile soil and may be container grown to great effect allowing the opportunity to move under cover in winter months.

It can be easily overwintered by pruning back and keeping frost free during the colder months. Wonderfully exotic and a real talking point!
