Pseudopanax laetus

(1 customer review)

Description

Pseudopanax laetus is unlike some of its relatives – here we have a wonderfully exotic looking, rounded large shrub with fabulous glossy, large oval leaves.  The leaves are held upon reddish-purple stems.  Who would have thought it to be a relative of Pseudopanax crassifolius?!  It’s a must-have for the exotic gardener and once mature the flowers form on deep purple stems, looking much like those of Fatsia or Ivy and great for pollinators.  These may be followed by berries which are loved by birds.

Although not exceptionally hardy, Pseudopanax laetus will thrive in milder gardens – make sure you give is a sunny-dappled shade position in free draning fertile soil.  In colder gardens protection may be given or grow in a container where it can be moved into a cool greenhouse or conservatory.   Responds well to feeding – particulalry using a liquid seaweed extract.  Can reach up to 2-3m in height ecentually but can easuly be pruned.  The large glossy leaves lend themselves to exotic schemes.
