Description
Pseudopanax lessonii ‘Gecko Gold’ is a new variety for us here at Big Plant and it fits in perfectly – it’s whacky and exotic looking! Much like P. lessonii ‘Cyril Watson’ in appearance but with fabulously golden variegated leaves. The leaves are trifoliate and held on upright stems with the varigation giving an almost marbled effect.
This New Zealand native is suited to a sheltered spot in sun or partial shade. It may also be grown in containers to great effect. Like most Pseudopanax it is pretty hardy but in the coldest gardens you may experience some frost damage which can be avoided if protection is given or it is moved into a cool greenhouse. Here on the south coast it seems perfectly happy. Grow in free draining fertile soil and be sure not to over-water. Perfect in an exotic border and a must have for the collector. Can eventually reach up to 2-3m height and spread but ‘Gecko Gold’ is not what I’d describe as ‘rampant’ and it may be nipped and tucked to fit in with your scheme.
Exotic, unusual and above all, a Pseudopanax – we love it.
