Neolitsea sericea

Description

Neolitsea sericea is a Japanese native sometimes known as ‘The Japanese Silver Tree’.  Essentially it is a medium sized evergreen shrub clothed in deep green ovate foliage.  During the summer months small fuzzy flowers appear but it is the emergence of spring foliage which captures the hearts of plant collectors.  New leaves emerge a bronze colour and they are felty – covered in metallic shiny hairs, like the fuzzy ears of a rabbit!  Eventually the leaves mature to green with silvery undersides.  Plant in a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade in fertile free draining soil.  Once Neolitsea has established in situ it will get better each year and you won’t be able to resist feeling the fuzziness of the beautiful coppery spring growth.
