Musa basjoo, often known as the Japanese hardy banana is indeed a banana plant you can successfully grow out doors in the U.K.  Originally considered to have originated from the Japanese islands of Ryukyu it's now known to have first been discovered growing in the wild in China, particularly the Sichuan province. For us gardeners it is a fabulously exotic foliage plant producing huge leaves up to 2 metres long held on stout trunks which themselves are capable of growing 2.5 metres tall. Musa basjoo is essential in the jungly or exotic garden being fast growing easy to grow throughout spring right up to the first frosts of autumn. During winter the leaves die down leaving a bare trunk which if protected from heavy freezing will regrow when the weather warms.

Questions we are often asked are 'Do I need protect my hardy banana in winter?' and 'How hardy is Musa basjoo?' well there are several trains of thought. Once established Musa basjoo is pretty much root hardy, the underground rhizome or as it is correctly known the pseudostem is capable of withstanding minus 10 centigrade whilst the main trunk seems happy to shrug off heavy frosts easily. This leaves us gardeners with options, if like me you want your Musa basjoo to get as big as possible then protecting the trunks is the best plan. I wait until the frosts have blackened the leaves forcing dormancy, then clothe the trunks in straw (more detail of this is in our care section). If on the other hand you are happy for your banana to die down each year then simply mulch around the base with a thick layer of mulch to keep the worst of the cold from the dormant shoots which will sprout during late spring growing to around 1.20-1.50cm each year.

Another interesting feature about Musa basjoo is that it is perfectly possible for them to flower and produce small inedible bananas here in the U.K.  This has occurred many times here in rural West Sussex.  Just be prepared for what seems like disaster as the flowering trunk withers and falls to the ground as the bananas develop, this is perfectly natural as many of you already know the old trunks are rapidly replaced by vigorous new shoots reaching for the sky. Indeed, if you mulch, protect and feed your banana generously it is happy to respond and after a few years will develop into a mini grove of jungly banana plants looking outrageous in exotic greenery. In warmer climes Musa basjoo is grown year-round as a valuable source of fibre used to produce textiles ranging from carpets, tablecloths through to kimonos and even high-quality paper.  All parts Musa basjoo are also used in Chinese medicine to treat various ailments.

So, there you have it I love this plant for its promise of hot steamy days and reminiscence of faraway travels in the tropics, it's so easy to grow, highly rewarding and despite being relatively common these days I will always have a place for it in my garden.
