Remusatia vivipara

Description

Remusatia viviparia is a rarely seen very jungly looking plant commonly known as the ‘Hitch Hiker’ plant due to it readily producing offsets that have spiny hairs that attach to animals and birds helping spread the plant around the forest floor. For us gardeners the real treat is that the large heart shaped leaves reach 45cm long and 30cm wide and are produced during the summer months. Not terribly hardy but luckily for us Remusatia are naturally winter dormant, the leaves dying down each autumn with the plant overwintering as an underground tuber. Here at Big Plant we simply lift the tubers after the first frost of autumn storing them much the same way as a dahlia only to be potted up, benefiting from a little heat in March/April ready to be planted out after the last frost in May.

Remusatia viviparia is a super plant that really should be more widely used by lovers of jungly plants, performing easily with little fuss. Best planted in fertile humus rich soil located in dappled shade. Can also be grown as a cool conservatory plant just remember it will still die down in autumn, so don’t throw it out when it makes it’s winter subterranean retreat.

Large mature plants for sale.
