Fatsia japonica ‘Murakumo Nishiki’ is another fabulous Fatsia and this is a much sought-after variety with wonderful variegation. Originating in Japan, this architectural shrub is hugely versatile and ideal for semi to full shade where it will make a handsome specimen.
The large, palmate leaves are bright yellow-green splashed with deep green variegation towards the edges. During the summer months, large clusters of round white-green flowers emerge which are followed by small black fruits – both are popular with wildlife. Fatsia japonica ‘Murakumo Nishiki’ is a hardy and robust shrub, easy to grow and suitable for use in mixed borders or in containers. A bold statement plant and excellent in an exotic garden where it will sit perfectly amongst other hardy exotics.
‘Murakumo Nishiki’ translates into ‘gathering clouds brocade’ which perhaps alludes to the variegated leaves – or perhaps not! Whatever, this is a fabulous plant and worthy of a place in your garden. Be sure to give it free draining but moisture retentive soil and avoid full sun.
