Lophosoria quadripinnata

Description

Lophosporia quadripinnata is a large beautiful fern native to many parts of South America. The lophosoria we grow originate from cooler regions of Chile and are suprisingly closely related to Dicksonia tree ferns, ‘surprisingly’ i’d say simply because Lophosoria grow unlike most tree ferns with a woody caudex like ‘Trunk’ which is hidden underground. The leaves however are every bit like a tree fern, huge and delicately branched with a dainty silver/grey underside creating a stunning visual effect, given dappled shade and fertile moisture retentive soils the leaves can be over two metres long in all directions arching on upright stems.

Quire simply one of the most exciting pretty hardy large ferns available to us. Unfortunately given its tough woody root system and reluctance to set spores it is hard and slow to propagate, hence its scarcity and high price.
